The name Threaded Expeditions comes from how I think about travel. Wildlife, conservation, local communities, and the people who come on a trip are all connected. Weaving Adventure With Purpose is the short version.
I started Threaded Expeditions because I love to travel, and I love the people I meet while traveling. Wildlife is usually a big part of my trips too.
At the same time, travel raises difficult ethical questions. There are carbon emissions, exploitation, colonialism, bad wildlife tourism, and the question of who actually benefits when we show up somewhere with money to spend. I don't think there is a perfectly ethical way to travel. I do think we can pay attention and make better choices.
For me, that is especially important with wildlife. I want to see animals in the wild, and I want the money I spend doing it to support conservation and the people who live alongside them.
I knew other travelers cared about those questions too.

Local guides know a place in a way I never will. I want them leading the way, sharing what matters, and being paid fairly for their time and knowledge.
I look for smaller, locally owned hotels and lodges whenever I can. They keep more money in the places we visit, and they usually make for a more interesting stay.
I love getting close to wildlife, but close does not have to mean touching it. I choose experiences where animals can behave like animals, guides respect their space, and tourism helps protect the habitat around them.
Local people should have a say in how tourism happens and benefit from it. I build trips with local partners, and part of every departure supports conservation or community work. I tell travelers exactly where that money goes.
You get excited when someone points out a bird you've never seen. You would rather spend time with a good local guide than race through five attractions. You like animals, but you don't need to hold one to have a good wildlife experience.
You appreciate a comfortable place to sleep, but the hotel is not why you came. You ask questions. You are also okay with the fact that weather changes, wildlife does whatever it wants, and sometimes the plan has to change.
You don't need to be a conservation expert. I'm still learning too. You just need to be curious and care about the effect we have on the places we visit.
